Empowering Youth to Tackle Mental Health: The Impact of YCAP at Ncihana Junior Secondary School

In 2023, the YCAP team at Ncihana Junior Secondary School embarked on a mission to address the pressing issue of mental health among their peers. Recognising the stigma and lack of resources surrounding mental health in their community, these young leaders took bold steps to foster a more supportive and understanding environment at their school.

Project Overview

The team’s efforts were comprehensive and multifaceted. They organised several initiatives to raise awareness about mental health, including a fun run, talent show, and a beauty pageant—all aimed at creating a stigma-free zone where learners could express themselves and feel supported. They also introduced “calm corners” throughout the school, providing safe spaces for students to retreat when feeling emotionally overwhelmed.

Additionally, the team was trained as peer counsellors, equipping them with the skills needed to support their fellow learners. These peer counselling sessions became a crucial resource for students, offering both individual and group sessions where they could discuss their feelings in a confidential and supportive environment.

Impact on the School Community

Before this project, the school had faced challenges, including the tragic loss of two learners who dropped out due to mental health struggles. There was a general lack of awareness about mental health issues, leading to missed opportunities to support those in need. However, the YCAP team’s efforts brought about significant change.

During the project, students began to open up about their struggles, some for the first time. The peer counselling sessions revealed deep-seated issues that had been silently affecting learners, but with the right support, these students found the courage to share their stories. The atmosphere at the school transformed into one of warmth and acceptance, where students felt safe to talk about their mental health without fear of stigma.

Sustaining the Impact

The positive changes brought about by this project have been sustained through ongoing collaboration with the Department of Social Development, which now provides professional support to learners in need. The school has committed to continuing the peer counselling program and is exploring partnerships with local businesses and organisations to further enhance their mental health initiatives.

Conclusion

The YCAP project at Ncihana Junior Secondary School is a testament to the power of youth-driven action. By addressing mental health, the team not only made an immediate impact on their peers but also laid the groundwork for lasting change. As we observe World Suicide Prevention Day, we are reminded of the importance of such initiatives and the need to continue supporting our youth in creating healthier, more resilient communities.
