Empowering Change Through YCAP: A Case Study of Ncihana J.S.S’s Mighty Greens Club
The Mighty Greens Club, formed by students at Ncihana J.S.S through the YCAP initiative, has made great progress in tackling climate change, environmental issues, and water wastage. Their motto, “See Green, See Life,” drives their mission to address these problems and create positive change in their community.
The Challenge:
The school faced several environmental problems, including severe water scarcity, excessive water wastage, and littering. With only six rainwater tanks, the school struggled to provide sufficient water for over 500 learners, often running out of water. Additionally, students lacked awareness about conserving resources, contributing to water waste and poor hygiene during the pandemic.
The Solution:
The Mighty Greens Club, with YCAP’s guidance, took proactive steps to:
· Secure water tanks and distribute buckets in classrooms to reduce waste.
· Utilise leaking tank water for the school garden, ensuring water conservation.
· Establish a vegetable garden to support the school’s nutrition program and promote healthy eating.
· Raise awareness about recycling, water conservation, and environmental responsibility through community clean-up events and education.
The Impact:
These initiatives produced significant results. For the first time, the school’s water supply lasted through the second term, eliminating the need to purchase water. The school garden flourished, providing fresh vegetables for the students. Furthermore, students’ attitudes towards environmental responsibility improved, with many participating in recycling programs and maintaining a cleaner school environment.
Sustainability and Growth:
The club’s actions have paved the way for future sustainability projects. By promoting water conservation, recycling, and environmental education, they have not only improved their school but have also inspired a broader movement in their community. The Mighty Greens Club has become a model for youth-driven change.
