Youth Citizens Action Programme – Powered by Empowervate

Empowering young people to be creators of change

The Youth Citizens Action Programme (Y-CAP) is proud to announce the finalists of this year’s Online National Y-CAP programme that has been running in schools since 2010.

The programme aims to empower, motivate and equip the South African youth to identify and address social issues such as poverty, racism, social and economic challenges and gender inequality in their schools and communities. The finalists have shown that they are enthusiastic about becoming active citizens and creators of change in their communities while helping to step closer to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Through this year’s online programme, learners were provided with the Y-CAP step-by-step values and project management toolkit and online workshops to launch their projects. The adjudicator feedback assisted those who made important addition and edits to their portfolios to progress to the semi-finals. These semi-finalists had workshops on video-oral presentation techniques before submitting their videos. The finalists have now been announced and they will compete to receive funds and equipment that enables them to further their projects.

The programme is powered by the non-profit organisation Empowervate and its funders and is implemented in collaboration with the National Department of Basic Education.

To qualify, school teams needed to submit a portfolio of information on the research, processes and impact of the projects they launched in their specific school communities, to either solve or mitigate the above-mentioned problems.

Through a stringent selection process, 15 teams from seven provinces ranging from Grade 5 to 11 were selected to participate in our final round.

The finalists will be attending the National showcase event online on the Day of Reconciliation – 16 December 2021. They will get motivational and educational talks and will have a final opportunity to impress the judges who will announce the winning teams on the day.

The winners receive tablets and a monetary prize to further their projects or start a new one as well as individual prizes of books, short-course bursaries, powerbanks and badges.
