Impact Study: Building Foundations for Educational Success – Sol Plaatje Secondary School’s YCAP Project

We are proud to highlight the achievements of the Senior Category winners of the 15th Annual National YCAP Championships, Sol Plaatje Secondary School. Their project, which focused on improving mathematics pass rates for Grade 8 learners, stands as a testament to the power of youth leadership and community-focused action.

Identifying the Challenge

The students of Sol Plaatje Secondary identified a critical issue affecting the academic performance of Grade 8 learners at Molapisi Primary School. The lack of proper study resources and the pervasive challenge of hunger were significantly impacting students’ ability to succeed in mathematics. Recognising the severity of the situation, the Sol Plaatje students decided to take action and make a difference.

The Project in Action

Using the YCAP toolkit, the students were able to plan and execute a series of impactful actions. The project kicked off with a comprehensive needs assessment, including surveys and interviews with both learners and educators. It became clear that stationery shortages and hunger were major barriers to success. The students then organized a donation drive, gathering stationery and non-perishable food items, which were distributed to Molapisi Primary School and Legae Childcare Centre. These donations not only addressed immediate needs but also ensured that learners had the tools they needed to succeed academically.

The Results

The results were immediate and measurable. After receiving the donated stationery, Molapisi Primary School saw a significant improvement in the Grade 8 learners’ mathematics pass rates. The students who had previously struggled with their studies now had the resources and motivation they needed to succeed. The tangible impact of this project is a testament to the power of community-driven action and the importance of addressing educational inequities.

Beyond the academic improvements, the project fostered a sense of responsibility and teamwork among the participants. The students developed stronger organisational and leadership skills, as they navigated challenges such as team member attrition and resource management. Their efforts were not only recognised within their school but also featured in local media, including the Mafikeng Mail.

Sustainability and Long-Term Impact

The project’s impact is far from temporary. By addressing foundational issues such as hunger and resource shortages, the students at Sol Plaatje Secondary laid the groundwork for lasting educational improvement in their community. The relationships they formed with Molapisi Primary School and Legae Childcare Centre have established a sustainable support network, one that will continue to benefit future learners.

Looking Ahead

This project is a shining example of the transformative power of youth leadership and community engagement. The students of Sol Plaatje Secondary have shown that with the right tools, determination, and community support, significant change is possible. As they continue their academic and personal journeys, the lessons learned through this project will stay with them, empowering them to create further positive change in the world.
