In a world facing compounding social, environmental, and economic crises, the call for sustainable, community-driven solutions has never been louder. At Empowervate, we’ve heard that call, and we’re answering it through a powerful, youth-led model of social entrepreneurship.
We’re not only equipping young people to become changemakers, but we’re also redefining what social entrepreneurship looks like in practice. And we believe corporates, entrepreneurs, and community leaders all have a critical role to play.
What Is Social Entrepreneurship, Really?
Social entrepreneurship is more than just “doing good.” It’s the practice of applying entrepreneurial thinking and action to address deeply rooted social issues, with the same intentionality, innovation, and sustainability that drive successful businesses.
Social entrepreneurs create ventures, movements, and projects that:
- Prioritise impact over profit
- Solve for root causes, not just symptoms
- Use innovative models that are scalable and replicable
- Engage and uplift communities
- Align with UN SDGs and long-term national goals
It’s a mindset that the world needs more of, and we’ve seen firsthand how young people are not only capable of it but uniquely positioned to lead it.
Enter YCAP: The Youth Citizens Action Programme
Since 2010, Empowervate’s flagship initiative, the Youth Citizens Action Programme (YCAP), has been empowering learners in South African public schools to take ownership of their communities through action-oriented problem-solving.
Every year, thousands of learners from all nine provinces:
- Identify a real issue in their school or community
- Use the YCAP Toolkit to plan, implement and sustain a solution
- Present their projects through structured district, provincial, and national showcases
- Learn and apply vital skills: communication, teamwork, leadership, time management, budgeting, and more
From tackling bullying and substance abuse to launching literacy drives and mental health support initiatives, these learners aren’t waiting for change. They are creating it.
And in doing so, they are becoming social entrepreneurs in their own right.
Redefining Social Entrepreneurship: From the Ground Up
Social entrepreneurship is often seen as the realm of seasoned innovators or impact investors. At Empowervate, we’re flipping that script.
We believe that:
- Social entrepreneurship starts young.
When students are given the right tools and mentorship, they create scalable solutions that often outlast their time in school.
- Purpose and profit can co-exist.
YCAP projects often result in micro-enterprises or campaigns that are low-cost, sustainable, and replicable, showing learners how to fund impact through smart planning.
- Real impact is measurable.
Through longitudinal impact studies, we’ve seen how YCAP alumni go on to become leaders in their communities, with lasting improvements in self-efficacy, confidence, and civic responsibility.
