When I first thought about how I wanted to celebrate my birthday month this year, I knew I didn’t want it to be about me alone. Being part of YCAP has taught me the importance of service, community impact, and turning ideas into action. Over time, I have had the privilege of adjudicating powerful learner-led projects across the country. These projects inspired me deeply, and I realised that I didn’t just want to sponsor initiatives and move on with life; I wanted to be part of the action myself. That was the spark behind the idea to host a Sandwich Drive in collaboration with the Grab & Go Foundation on 30 August 2025.
The idea also came from a personal place. Growing up, my grandmother ran a tuckshop, and every morning, Sunbake Bakery would deliver bread in the early hours. As children, we would wake up to the smell of fresh bread, and that became a symbol of comfort, care, and community. Years later, I wanted to recreate that same sense of comfort for others — to give people something as simple yet meaningful as a sandwich made with love.
To bring the idea to life, I ran it past Monique Parsley, a member of the Grab & Go Foundation executive team. She immediately saw the value and supported the initiative, and together we began planning. It wasn’t just about food; it was about mobilising people around a cause. Even though it was my birthday celebration, the focus was on bringing joy and dignity to others.
On the day itself, the energy was uplifting. Volunteers worked together with enthusiasm, and as sandwiches were handed out, I could see the gratitude in the eyes of those who received them. That moment confirmed that the hard work and planning were worth it. It wasn’t just a project — it was a full-circle experience that connected my childhood memories with the inspiration I gained from YCAP projects, showing me what happens when we turn ideas into action.
Reflecting on the experience, I feel incredibly grateful. Hosting the Sandwich Drive gave me a deeper understanding of what it means to lead with empathy and to turn small ideas into meaningful change. It also reminded me that kindness and service are powerful tools, and that the work we do through YCAP really does shape lives, not just of the communities we serve, but also our own.
This was more than a birthday celebration. It was a lesson in giving, growth, and gratitude, one that I will carry with me moving forward as I continue my journey with YCAP.
